Frequently asked questions

What deductions come out of a Philippine salary?
Four things: SSS, PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG contributions, and withholding tax. The three contributions are computed from your gross monthly pay using the current contribution tables; withholding tax is then computed on what remains, because mandatory contributions are deductible before tax. That order matters — computing tax on gross overstates the deduction.
Is 13th month pay taxable?
Only above the statutory threshold. 13th month pay and other benefits are tax-exempt up to a ceiling set by law; anything above that is added to your taxable income for the year. Most rank-and-file employees fall under the ceiling and pay nothing on it.
Why is my actual payslip slightly different?
Employers may use a semi-monthly rather than monthly withholding table, may apply different rounding, and may deduct items this calculator knows nothing about — company HMO, loans, union dues, tardiness. Treat this as an estimate of the statutory deductions, not a payslip replica.
Does this work for freelancers?
No. Freelancers and self-employed professionals are taxed differently — either the 8% flat rate or graduated rates on net income, with contributions paid voluntarily rather than split with an employer. Use the freelancer tax calculator instead.
